What is a Solar Pv Coating

With the faster depletion of resources like wood, fuel, etc. today, renewable energy is being sought after like never before. One of the most promising and successful form of renewable, clean and green energy is ‘Solar Energy’. It can be harnessed through Photovoltaic route and Thermal route.

PV Cells are best known for generating electric power by converting the energy received from sun into movement of electrons by ‘photovoltaic effect’. Large sets of PV cells can be connected together to form solar modules, arrays, or panels. Due to direct energy conversion and being non-pollutant, the growth of solar cells has seen an exponential rise. Subsequently, researchers all around the world are thus working on improving the efficiency of the solar panels.

A few of many major problems that impede harnessing full potential of a PV Panel is the dirt that accumulates on the glass above the panel and reflection of the sun’s light from the panel or lesser absorptive.

Why is dirt accumulation a problem and how much of a problem is it?

Dirt accumulation causes the sun light or the photons to deflect and thereby reduces the net amount of the photons striking the PV Panel. Consequently, this causes a reduction of at least 30% of total efficiency. The loss can also be more than 50%, which would essentially deem the panel useless. It is therefore important to manually clean the glass surface of the panel regularly.

Why is reflection a problem and how much of a problem is it?

PV Panels work by converting the absorbed solar energy into electrical energy. Reflection of solar energy from the glass surface would only mean lesser absorptivity, which means lesser solar energy to be converted into electrical energy. This would definitely reduce the efficiency of solar PV Panel

What is Solar PV Coating?

A Solar PV Coating is a Nano scale coat that is applied on the PV Panel to help with the issues that reduce its efficiency. A solar PV coating can work for resolution of one issue at a time or more than one altogether.

A solar PV coating can use the photocatalytic property to break the dirt down and push it down with water that forms a sheet on the glass owing to the superhydrophobic property of the coating. The superhydrophobic property also ensures that the water does not stay on the panel and block the sunlight to pass through.

The anti-reflective coating on the panel increase the transmissibility of sunlight and the photos to the cells, thereby increasing the amount of absorbed energy.

There are special coatings made with composites that coalesce the properties of inorganic and organic materials, absorbing even the infrared spectrum from the electromagnetic radiations falling from the sun. Organic materials only absorb photons and reflect off the IR rays, while the property of inorganic materials to use the IR rays has been used by the scientists to make Nano scale coatings that increase the absorptivity.

The main idea of using a Solar PV Coating is to protect the PV Panel of dust, dirt, unnecessary reflection, acidic rain and the surrounding environment in general. There are various companies private and public that are researching better coating materials for the increasing the efficiency of PV Panels.
